What Is LANTITE?

The LANTITE, or Literacy And Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education test is a standardized exam taken by people who want to become a teacher in Australia.

This test requires teacher candidates to demonstrate their understanding for and abilities in literacy and numeracy to make sure that they are ready to take on the responsibilities of being an effective classroom teacher.

What Is the Purpose of LANTITE?

As briefed above, this exam is essentially the proof that the teacher actually knows the content knowledge that they will teach in the classroom.

Furthermore, each teacher candidate needs to take the exam and pass it at or above the standard level before entering the classroom as a licensed teacher. This exam helps the Australian Department of Education have proof that the future teacher has demonstrated a minimum requirement for the academic knowledge to become a teacher.

Keep in mind that the LANTITE exam is actually two separate tests:

  1. Literacy Component
  2. Numeracy Component

These can be taken on different dates or on the same day. Both are required to gain licensure.

Furthermore, the literacy component focuses on topics such as reading comprehension, word usage, and writing, whereas the numeracy component will test a candidate’s understanding of real-world math problems using a variety of topics. Such topics include algebra, geometry, statistics, and more.
